Holidays in Literature

  • Damian Barr's Literary Salon United Kingdom (map)

July is often a time to escape to holiday destinations, whether it's to a beloved field in Ireland, tent and dogs with you in the car, or to some exotic location half way across the globe. Some of our favourite books are set on holiday, describing romances, accidents, murders, revelations or world events intruding on the holiday bubble. Join our in house bibliotherapist Ella Berthoud tonight for a cocktail on the beach, a hot chocolate by the side of a lake, a hot toddy half way up a mountain, or a cup of tea on the sofa for a staycation. Ella will be looking at books by Sandy Barker, Helen Whitaker, Emily Henry, Cary Hansson, Alex Garland, Somerset Maugham, John Mortimer, Jeff Dyer, and many more. What are your best books set on holiday? Let us know your thoughts, send in yoru questions, and Ella will attempt to answer any questions you have with a cure from literature.
